should he pay or should you pay?

during the first date, hands down, i think the guy should pay (given that he was the one to ask me out). however, by the second date, i normally want to show the guy that i’m not just interested in having a man pay my way, so i always offer to at least pay my part. but is this a turn-off for the guy? 10 out of 10 times, the guy is taken aback and all of a sudden the situation turns very uncomfortable for everyone. Now i’m thinking, if the check comes out and i just sit there and not offer, i’ll come off like one of those girls who say “ohh..look at that, i forgot my wallet.” i want to show them i’m independent, and that i don’t need anyone to take care of me. i thought guys would really appreciate knowing that there are girls out there like me who are not gold-diggers, but am i wrong?

That’s where I use the fake purse grab – I reach toward my bag, start digging around, pull out the purse and by the time I’ve opened it he has usually said ‘let me get this.’ He feels chivalrous and I don’t feel cheap!
